Facebook: Then and Now

  • Initiation of “Facebook Stalking”- Spending an exorbitant amount of time going through your friends’, and friends-of-friends’, pictures and profile contents. This was my first exposure to staying informed. I hope they highlight that in The Facebook Movie. Good luck, Mr. Sexy Back.
  • Groups only in your college network- Groups were only within college networks. I’m still in b#$ch please, I’m from California! (BU Chapter).
    • Today, groups can be international and mobilize the target audience. For example: Election ‘08- One million strong for Barack Obama. His PR team deserves a thumbs-up, “I like.”

  • No mini feed– maybe you call it News feed? In September of ‘06 we petitioned the mini feed, a constant update of Facebook friends, turned out well huh?
  • Today, people update their status constantly. During the MJ Memorial, CNN and Facebook teamed up to broadcast the coverage. There were an astonishing 6000 updates per minute.

In 2005 I never thought I would have seen the day my mom asked me, “So what does it mean when somebody pokes me?” But it makes sense. With this average user age growing, apart from my retired parents, Facebook has become an important tool for business. In PR, we make a living networking, so what better way to create a network than using the O.G. of social networks?

So for my fellow college Facebook users, since you already have the tools to thrive in this environment, come to the PRSA-SF Young Professional’s Meeting at Eastwick’s SF office October 15 (Shameless plug #2). Learn to utilize your Facebook expertise and apply it towards “real life.” Why not keep it gangsta?
